A small room does not need small furniture. It needs fewer, better-proportioned pieces, and space around them.
Go low and leggy
Low sofas and tables keep sight lines open, and pieces raised on legs let the floor run underneath them, which makes a room read as larger.
One rug, not three
A single rug large enough for the front legs of every seat ties a room together. Several small ones chop it up.
Choose fewer pieces, and let each one have room to breathe.
Keep the palette close: oak, linen, a little sage. When colours and materials relate, the eye rests instead of jumping.
