How to Care for Fine Jewelry

A few small habits keep metals bright and stones clear for years.

How to Care for Fine Jewelry

Put jewelry on last and take it off first: after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and before swimming, exercise or cleaning. Chemicals and chlorine are the most common cause of dull metal and loosened stones.

Store pieces apart

Harder stones scratch softer metals and pearls, so keep each piece in its own pouch or compartment, and lay chains flat or hang them so they do not knot.

Clean gently

Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush are enough for most gold and gemstone pieces; pearls only need a soft, slightly damp cloth. When in doubt, follow the care advice that came with your piece or ask your jeweler.
